Two Weeks Old!

My Dearest Evan,

Two weeks have come and gone and you have been such a great baby to mom and dad. We started a little rocky, as the pediatrician made us supplement with formula in order to get your blood sugar up before they would release you from the hospital. But, since my milk came in, you've been gaining weight nicely and we met the goal of getting you back to birth weight by two weeks old (hard to do since you were such a big baby).

You have been "sleeping through the night" since about day 5. Really, most of the time I have to wake you up every three hours to eat. Otherwise, you'd sleep longer, which you can't do this young, but it's a good sign for things to come! While I don't like getting up every three hours, I am so grateful you're making it as easy as possible on me.

During the days, we've been feeding a lot, you've been sleeping in my arms and I've been working on my recovery. Your latch is still really strong (I picture a piranha when you latch on but it gets better throughout the feeding) and you like one side way more than the other side. I'm not producing as much milk as I did with Avery, so we'll have to see how long I can nurse you - not sure I can pump what you need for daycare. Your cheeks are the cutest chubby cheeks I've ever seen - love them so much!

You make the cutest sounds - some adorable squeaks - and sometimes when you're fussy, I just have to pick you up and you calm right down. I can't get enough of you laying on my chest to sleep - you're so much bigger than Avery and Alex were that it definitely feels different than holding them but it also definitely feels like we were made for each other.

I think you have your father's chin, your sister's eyes and lips, and my ears and head shape. Of course, this could change, but that's where we're at right now. Your hair is so dark - we don't know where that came from. Everyone talks about how they can't stop staring at your pictures and how handsome you are. I must agree - it's hard to take my eyes off of you.

When you cry, your arms flail and you squeak at the end of each cry. You currently have a hard time passing gas and pooping so you cry trying to do that - we'll figure it out soon enough - it's hard being a newborn! You also have that classic newborn startle reflex to loud noises, which is fun to watch but I'm sure not very settling for you. Other than the gas issues, you're a very chill baby - just trying to figure out what is going on. Your sister is so loving towards you - she tries really hard to be gentle and tender with you and she's very helpful in trying to comfort you. You're one lucky little brother!

Here is your life in pictures right now:

You, my son, are perfect. We are so fortunate to have you join this family and we're looking forward to what the future will bring us!
All my love,
Mom
